UMBERTO

"Prophecy of the Black Widow" CS

"Within minutes all I can think of is the finest elements of Goblin & Zombi rolled into an evocative driving, behemoth of an album! You know, the real striding prog-horror deal. I can take or leave a lot of this stuff to be honest - taken out of the context of a quality 70's/80's shocker, this derivative style of mock-incidental music can often err on the side of simply kitsch, but this? The clarity of production and the powerfully brooding low-end have me creaming myself! This is deep, innovative retro-progressive music with a relentless stalker mentality, wearing a full-on dirty groovesuit. Can you stalk someone in a suit? Patrick Bateman did I'm sure. I don't just want to sit here raving about the way this genre-flaying record makes me feel this crisp Autumn morn. It's one of the finest examples I've heard of that classic post-Italo sound, constructed by a fully-fledged genius in waiting. The sinister, dystopian synths on Prophecy Of The Black Widow are to die for on here, it is a truly hypnotic, all-consuming journey that transcends plagiarism somehow, due to its beautifully crafted nature." - Norman Records

SOUNDING THE DEEP

"Night" CS

First self-titled release now available on cassette!

"David Williams is an experimental/ambient musician from Kansas City, USA who began composing under the moniker of ‘Sounding The Deep’ in 2007. ‘Sounding The Deep’ approachs the world of experimental/ambient music with rich guitar workings that aren’t necessairly anything new by way of their structuring or arrangements, however, I think that the musical outcomes of these workings lend themselves to a very unique sense of cinematic interpretation. For this project David Williams specifies that inspiration for the works on his latest release ‘Night’ were found in the plains and skies of the midwestern region of the United States. In retrospect of my experience with David’s work, I would venture to assert that the pieces on ‘Night’ characterize these influential factors quite well, as the subtle guitar interludes seem to adequately summon the innate sense of melancholy that defines the naked emptiness of the plains in the midwestern United States. Given this, the musical content of the works found on ‘Night’ provide dense droning backgrounds amidst slight melodic guitar infusions. The dynamic of these works moves predominantly from minimal to more involved via the use of a variety of rather intricate chord progressions that constitute the backbone of the pieces. All in all, I’ve found this music to be extremely enjoyable and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in guitar-based experimental ambient music."

BRAIN SYNDROME

"Disconnect" CS

Mysterious thrift store find, not much info, but has to be some early 80's synth wizardry conjured out of Germany's cesspool of minimal kraut n' roll. Early goth new age synthesis, the 3 tracks here are a mix of experimental sounds blended with melodic images of 2 dudes blasted out in a basement somewhere in the USA via (to my knowledge) the early 80's.

"Awakening" LP/CS/CD

Long out-of-print cassette originally released on Sloow Tapes (Belgium). Recorded after Expo '70 played France in 2008, just a week after the IAO festival where the label owner and musician met. Upon returning to the states, the experience spawned the 2 day recording session materializing these 2 improvised tracks.

"Awakening, features some super stripped down drumming (or drum machine, hard to tell), locked into an endless groove, pulsing over a swirling spacescape of smeared riffs and fragmented melodies, it sounds a bit like Goblin, very soundtracky and otherworldly, space-y and mysterious, and not at all cheesy, more sort of classic new age / krautrock, think Klaus Schultze, scoring some super abstract French sci-fi flick from the sixties, and you'll sort of get the vibe."

SUNGOD
"Laurentide & Cordilleran + Others" CS

Sungod from Austin, Texas have been working hard and consistently since I was introduced to them at SXSW in 2011. Expo '70 shared the same stage that night early on in the showcase week along with Quiet Evenings, Hubble, Woodsman, Toby Aronson, Kevin Shields, Thousand Foot Whale Claw, just to name a few. Unfortunately I arrived to the show just as Sungod were in on the main stage performing, I didn't get to catch much that evening, but Mike of Sungod and I swapped tapes. Some point in the week I busted out their self-released hand packaged cassette release and came to find out that this was a majestic collection of superb drones, crafted well with great tones and the patience to let the instrumentation blend together.

This is a re-release of that great cassette that was traded to me. Sounds hints of early Six Organs of Admittance, La Monte Young and obscure new age synth workouts while incorporating free-form playing under those synth textures, building each track with intensity.

KOI POND
"So Higher" LP/CS

Koi Pond is comprised of 3 friends who get together when the time is right to do what is known to many band participants as “jamming”. This term may be a bit harsh on your eyes, but when friends David Aron, Arik Roper and Pete Vogl some together to “jam”, its an epic dense solid session of heavy playing. Koi Pond originally released a cassette on Night People entitled Volcano, which I has the pleasure of happening on to. That limited cassette peaked my interest, sounding like a basement tape from Exmagma or some other lost recording from the mid seventies. After contacting the band to find out this is a one-off project between friends, I coerced the trio into reuniting for a recording, which became So Higher, a recording of 2 side dimensions between locked Krautrock groove with washes of synth exploration. Side two is a very different affair, more improvised heavy jamming comprised of solid bass line, dubby drumming and heavy psych guitar workouts. Those same elements from the cassette “jams” are there, but more focused and sonically represented. At times side A showcases a beastly resemblance to Monster Magnets 25 - Tab mixed with Spacemen 3, side B on the other hand, is a journey unto its own...

"Koi Pond is a three piece from NYC made up of some generally awesome dudes. Arik Roper plays bass and is a legendary artist/illustrator who does work for numerous bands, labels and publications such as Arthur, Southern Lord etc. while also playing in other bands such as Under Satans Sun and Mattalama. Pete Vogl plays synth while also jamming in Bow Ribbons, David Aron plays drums, is the perpetrator for Little Cakes Gallery, used to skateboard alot, makes rad visual artwork, and jams in USUN with Mark Borthwick and Hisham Bharoocha. Despite these dudes epic resumes, Koi Pond is epic all on its own. "Volcano" (debut release on Night People) is all about cosmic grooves, deep often minimal, endless repetitions that slowly evolve into more psyched out blissed out trances. Roper and Arons tight rhythmic foundations create the perfect backdrop for Vogal's synth improvisations. This is a meditative listen that never gets old, it just keeps grooving on and on forever. Like Neu! covering Dark Magus in a Tibetan Monastery." - sunflowerchakramilk blog

LAUBE
"Ausmerzen" CS

Originally self-released by the band in plain white CD jackets.
"This German trio of Nils Lehnhäuser (bass), Christian Dräger (drums) & Eric Bauer (piano) have produced a wonderful set of minimal, melodic, ambient jazz. The instrumentation is sparse, the melodies free-falling and the mood tense yet underscored with a studied lethargy. I'm reminded, favourably, of Angelo Badalamenti's scores for Twin Peaks as "Ausmerzen" has that same dreamy quality to the music. It's a twilight album full of sleepy colours and vague shapes and for the most part it's really quite beautiful. I'll admit to being less than enamoured with the final track as the musicianship and musicality of the rest of the album is replaced with atonal, avant-garde crashes and bangs. It sounds like an Einsturzende out-take or a Z'ev composition and as such feels remarkably out-of-place here. In other circumstances I'd have probably enjoyed it but after the sublime beauty of the preceding tracks it is a disagreeable end to a sumptuous album.“ - Review by Wonderful Wooden Reasons
